Microsoft’s September 2026 security updates for Windows Server 2019/2022/2025 have reportedly caused Remote Desktop Services (RDS) connection problems, including RDP sessions getting stuck at “Connecting…” and existing sessions becoming unresponsive. The issue appears to be particularly relevant to servers running RDS/TSplus-based remote access.
As a temporary mitigation, affected servers can be configured to use TCP-only transport for RDP, rather than uninstalling the security updates. Administrators should back up the relevant registry settings, apply the TCP-only configuration, run gpupdate /force, and preferably reboot during a maintenance window. Afterward, monitor TerminalServices-RemoteConnectionManager Event ID 20498 and normal user logon/logoff activity for any recurrence.
