5 Things to take care of Cloud Hosting

Every day, you read about the benefits of cloud hosting. It seems like every hosting blog is brimming with news of the cloud, and it also seems like “the cloud” is one giant fluffy thing. It is, no doubt, the newest hosting trend, but is it all its cracked up to be?

In yesterday's post, I outlined the benefits and drawbacks of cloud hosting as it compares to dedicated server options. Today, let you know about five things to consider before moving to the cloud – and some of these things could involve legal issues if you aren't careful!

  1. Do you own those files? Here's a sticky situation to think about: let's say that you have hundreds of highly sensitive client files stored somewhere. Now, let's say that you decided to move those files to a cloud. Sounds okay, right? It might not be. It's entirely possible (and likely) that those files are not yours alone. If the records you want to move belong to a client, you could be in trouble should you decide to move the information anywhere else?
  2. How secure is that cloud? The most secure cloud encryption I've seen is split-key encryption, and a few companies only provide that type of service. Why split-key? Because bits and pieces of your security key are strewn amongst various users or in different spots, and that means a code that's a lot harder for a hacker to crack.
  3. Are you getting a cloud? Here's the tricky thing about new hosting buzzwords: every company wants a piece of the pie, and that means that some companies offering cloud hosting aren't providing cloud options at all. Yep, that's right. You may not be getting anything that's cloud-based.
  4. Do you have control? With dedicated hosting, you have the most control, but this is often not the case at all when it comes to cloud hosting. Make sure that you have some of the control. It's not likely that you'll have all of it, but some power is significant.
  5. Is cloud better? I mean, it is better? Not sure? If you aren't sure, it's probably not all it's cracked up to be. Sure, cloud hosting sounds cool, but you may not get what you've bargained for. Are you sure that you'd rather go the cloud route?

On this site, we're big fans of good old dedicated hosting. I won't go into details about why we like dedicated hosting best because it's all over this site. But, I will tell you that I've seen many companies get duped by cloud hosting companies and that you should be very careful when moving to the cloud. Sometimes, trends are best when they come and go, and this might be the case with most cloud options.
