  • GENOME: It interacts with the operating System through the window manager. The desktop displays three menus: Applications, Places, and System.
    Places – to access commonly used locations like home directory and the computer window to access drives, shared file systems, and all the directories on the local network.
    System – includes preferences and administration menus.
    With the preference menu, a user configures GENOME settings (themes, mouse, behavior). The desktop supports xdg-dirs configuration that enables the home directory to have default directories for commonly used files, which include documents, downloads, pictures, music, and videos.
    Each window has minimize, maximize, and close buttons and can be dragged by the left-clicking title bar. Double-clicking reduces the window as a corresponding button.
    The desktop supports full drag-and-drop operations, like to copy files press CTRL & then drag, to create link hold both CTRL & SHIFT key to the location, default drag move the files.
    The System -> Preference menu organized into several sub-menus: Personal Look & Feel, Internet & Network, Hardware, and System. The Help button in each window displays detailed descriptions and examples.
    The Personal -> Keyboard configuration lets users map key to specific tasks, for example, assigning multimedia keys on a keyboard to media tasks such as play and pause.
    The Personal -> File Management determines the way files and directories displayed along with added information to show in icon captions or list views.
    The Look and Feel -> Windows enable features like window roll-up, window movement key, and mouse window selection.
    The Hardware -> Keyboard and Hardware -> Mouse for configuring mouse and keyboard. From mouse image, configure mouse motion and hand orientation. The keyboard preferences window shows several panels for selecting keyboard models (Layout), setting keys (Layout options), and repeat delay and enforcing breaks from power typing as a health precaution.
  • GENOME Applets: Right Click -> Select Add entry would list all available applets, drag them from the menu to the panel to add them. The list includes dictionary lookup, current weather, system monitor, the CPU frequency scaling monitor, network connection monitor, search to search system files, Lock, Shutdown and Logout buttons.

    Battery status (battstat)
    A symbol table (charpick)
    A system monitor for cpu, memory and network usage information (cpufreq)
    A drive mount applet (drivemount)
    Geyes, a funny applet that shows a pair of eyes which follow the cursor (geyes)
    A weather applet (gweather)
    A command execution and macro plugin (mini-commander)
    A sound applet (deprecated and replaced by libsound-applet in GnomeFlashback (mixer)
    A model lights plugin for modems (modemlights)
    A multi load plugin (multiload)
    A notes applets (stickynotes)
    A trash applet (trashapplet)
    A window picker applet that shows open applications as icons. It saves a lot of screen space and is very useful if many applications are open. (windowpicker)
